My first half marathon

Sunday I completed my first half marathon.

Over the halfway mark

21.1 km in beautiful surroundings. The first 10 km went very well with a pace of 5.01 min/km. Right after image above, however, was the worst hill of the whole route and it broke me. My pace for the full race was 5 minutes 30 per km, this means I ran a full minute slower per km. Not exactly what I had in mind, but the important part is that I finished. There were parts of the race where I did not think I would do even that.

Now you may ask, how did it come to that. During training I have run distances up to 19-20 km. A half marathon should be easy.

Of course, a half marathon should be easy if you are conditioned for it, and haven’t spent the previous week and a half moving and having a cold. I must admit my preparations have been somewhat sub-par recently, and in hindsight I probably should not have raced. Having completed, however, I am glad I did. It gives me a clear target to beat for next time, and it means I completed a half marathon :)

I feel ok in my body, and will probably get out on a short run tomorrow or the day after.
