Colophon

An inscription placed usually at the end of a book, giving facts about its publication.

Who is this person?

I am a young man named Jonas Rabbe. I live in Lyngby, a suburb of Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. I live together with my wife Susan, who I have been married to since July 31, 1999, and our dog Toby Socks.

I was brought into this world on March 7, 1978.

What about the dog?

My dog is a mutt named Toby Socks. His mom was a Samoyed (who unfortunately died while he was very young), and his dad is a German Shepherd/Labrador mix. Toby has his own page too on dogster.com, but he still does not have any online pup pals so be sure to add you dog and maybe they can be friends.

Toby is an extremely silly dog and he loves snow more than anything as should be evident from his dogster pictures.

What’s in a name?

Finding the right name for a blog can be a pretty harrowing experience. I’m sure every blogger out there has had the dilemma of trying to find the right name, the name that encapsulates what their blog is really all about. The name “The Engineered Boulderer” came to me one of my many days climbing at the gym.

Climbing is a big deal for me, and a name not incooperating this would – I feel – not be true to my nature. Bouldering is a branch of climbing which takes place on boulders (hence the name), normally on a scale such that all the safety equipment needed is a small matress, called a crash pad.

Another fact I wanted to incooperate is that I have a master’s degree in computer science and engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).

Given the name and the factors that inspired it, it is especially fitting that the gym at which I was climbing when I came up with it was the climbing gym at DTU.

What about the tools?

If you’re interested in the nuts and bolts, I use WordPress to publish this weblog because of its flexibility, expandibility, and user community.

The site is hosted on the built in Apache web server of Mac OS X server. The templates are written in BBEdit, images are manipulated in Photoshop CS, both running on Mac OS X.

I have strived for 100% validatable XHTML and CSS. Another goal is to have everything view the same in all browsers (sigh). Of course, I couldn’t help myself when I noticed that Safari supports the text-shadow property, I mean, how could I pass that up. Of course, only Safari users can see it (so far), so what are you waiting for? Go get at mac already.

What is this syndication thing?

Traditionally a syndicate is an association which undertakes a specific business or an agency which sells comics, articles, or photographs for publication in a series of newspapers at the same time. In the world of blogs, however, it has become a term for feeds that are readable in a newsreader. The seemingly most popular syndication protocol or format is RSS. Below I have a link to a RSS feed for my blog.

The RSS feed I provide is based on the RSS 2.0 specification. RSS is a standard for syndicating frequently updated content from a site using a newsreader. Below are two newsreaders recommended by Apple for Macintosh and Windows computers respectively. To use the feed, copy the link for the RSS file into the Subscription panel of the newsreader application.

There are also other feeds around the place. They are marked as links with the text “RSS feed”.
